Your personal sphere of play:
The Department of Political Science provides research and teaching in the full range of core areas of political science, develops innovative and problem-oriented research focuses and offers a broad diversity of options for its students to seek specialisation. Its staff is currently involved in examining the transformation of governance, state and democracy in different policy areas, geographical regions and political spaces.
The Centre for European Integration Research (EIF) is a research group within the Department of Political Science that is dedicated to research and teaching in the field of European integration. It has specialized in problem-oriented basic research regarding different EU policy areas and their comparison.
Your future tasks:
Active participation in research, teaching and administration in the field of EU research (Prof. Dr. Gerda Falkner). This includes mainly:
- Establishing or expanding your profile as an independent researcher in cooperation with colleagues at EIF;
- Being active internationally in publishing and holding lectures;
- Founding long-term structures for research and acquisition of external funds;
- Teaching and supervising students;
- Participating in research projects and hosting international conferences;
- Taking part in research evaluations and quality assurance;
- Involvement in administrating research, teaching and institutional matters;
- Starting date scheduled for February 1st, 2025; Duration of the limited contract for 36 months (January 31st, 2028); Deadline for applications on January 9th, 2025.
This is part of your personality:
• Specialisation in European integration or EU policies with publications or draft manuscripts, the prime research focus being the EU-level analysis of the European multi-level system, based on a problem-oriented, qualitative and possibly comparative approach. In particular, we welcome expertise to broaden the Vienna Working Group on Digital Europe. Relevant are, inter alia, recent EU policy initiatives like the Digital Services Act and AI Act; digitalisation in the EU's foreign and security, migration, and border management policies; foreign influence on Europe via digital media, and dangers to democratic governance in Europe arising from processes of digitalisation that remain largely unregulated in either legal or practical terms.
• PhD graduate in political science or a neighbouring and related discipline (graduation at the latest in winter 2024);
• Proven skills regarding publishing in highly renowned, pertinent journals and publishing houses;
• Affinity and high level of knowledge concerning European integration and fields of EU policy;
• Proficiency in English, competence in spoken and written German is an asset;
• Well versed in qualitative (and, optionally, quantitative) empirical methods of the social sciences;
• Excellent at expressing yourself orally and in writing;
• Experienced in prolific didactics;
• Able to work harmoniously in a team;
• Capable software user (MS Office)
Further Assets:
• Experience in acquiring external funding or participation in research projects respectively;
• Having already given lectures in international settings;
• Previous teaching in political science;
• Capable to hold classes in English;
• Knowledge in curricular matters and supervision of students (possibly even concerning master or doctoral theses);
• Insight into university processes and structures;
• International experiences;
• Skill set regarding equality and diversity.
