At the Centre for Teacher Education at the University of Vienna, the Austrian Competence Centre for Biology (AECC Biology) focuses on the scientific aspects of teaching and learning in the subject of Biology. Through innovative, practice-oriented, and national as well as international research, teaching, and development projects, we contribute to the advancement of biology education in schools and other educational institutions. Current research areas of our team include scientific inquiry,Nature of Science (NOS), Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), environmental education and climate change education, plant- and insect awareness. We are looking for a dedicated PhD student (Prae doc, 4 years) who will complete a PhD in the framework of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), environmental education and climate change education with a focus on the current biodiversity and climate crisis.
The employment duration is 4 years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship is automatically extended to 4 years if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a non-extension declaration.
The position shall be filled with effect from 1 March 2025.
Your future tasks:
You actively participate in research, teaching & administration at the AECC Biology in the field of Biology Education on an national and international level, including:
- Participation in research projects in the field of Education for Sustainable Development/Environmental Education/Climate Change Education
- Writing of scientific research publications and teacher education publications, giving public lectures (all on national and international level)
- Contribution to the preparation of grant applications for third-party funding
- Co-Coordination and participation in the research-, teaching-, and outreach-project "Bee.Ed – Education through the bee."
- Independent teaching in accordance with the collective labor agreement
- Involvement in evaluation measures and quality assurance
- Student support and involvement in the supervision of B.Ed and M.Ed. theses.
- Contribution in Third Mission and Outreach activities
- Involvement in the organization of conferences, symposia, and events
- Contribution to Biology in-service teacher training
- Participation in institute, teaching, and research administration.
Completing of a dissertation agreement in the field of the AECC Biology’s current research foci in ESD/Environmental Education/Climate Change Education, preferably with a focus on the current biodiversity and climate crisis, within 12-18 months is expected
This is part of your personality:
- Above average Diploma/Staatsexamen/Master Degree in Biology Education or Biology
- Very good knowledge in Biology Education
- Teaching experience in middle- and highschool level Biology at school (e. g. teacher training, “Schulpraktika”) or informal education settings (natural history museum, zoo etc.)
- Excellent verbal and written articulateness
- Excellent command of written and spoken German
- Excellent command of written and spoken English
- Very good IT user skills
- Team competence as well as high social and communication skills
- You should enjoy working with highschool and university students, as well as in-service teachers
- High communication and organisational skills
- Interdisciplinary orientation and willingness to work across disciplines
Also expected are:
- Willingness to qualify for conducting empirical Biology Education Research, e.g. by acquiring skills in statistics
- Willingness to coordinate and participate in the research-, teaching- and outreach-project "Bee.Ed", also by acquiring basic beekeeper skills
- Flexibility and mobility, as data collection will take place in schools and other educational settings
Desirable qualifications are:
- Previous experience in Biology Education Research and Development, indicated e.g. by a Master thesis, Diploma or Staatsexamen with a focus on Biology Education
- Teaching experience at university level/Experience with E-Learning settings
- Knowledge about structure and processes at a university
- International experience (e.g. by spent time abroad)
