A PhD position for a university assistant (prae doc) is available at the Department of Functional Materials and Catalysis at the Faculty of Chemistry for 3 years temporary employment relationship. The group of Prof. Hans Flandorfer at the University of Vienna mainly focusses on structure and thermodynamics of inorganic materials systems. The topic of the planned research is on synthesis and characterization of Li-ion battery active electrode materials. The research project takes place in the interdisciplinary and international framework. Thus, this position requires a high level of commitment and communication. The project combines materials chemistry synthesis methods, thermochemical measurements, and structural characterization.
You have previous knowledge in materials chemistry related to solid state chemistry, experimental thermochemistry, microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Moreover, you have a working knowledge of university procedures and structures. Ideally, you have been involved in scientific work and have gathered some international experience.
Your future tasks:
The successful candidate will continue our work within the FFG-Project MoSiLIB which is dedicated to the development and characterization of new anode materials based on SnS2/Si composite materials. Also, LNMO materials for the cathode of a full cell are included in our investigations. This means thermochemical measurements, structural investigations and interpretation of electrochemical experiments.
You actively participate in research, teaching & administration, which means:
- You will be involved in research projects and scientific studies in the field of battery materials, at the crossroads of environmental science, resource management and sustainability.
- You will independently plan and carry out complex experiments, evaluate the data and interpret the results.
- You will be involved in publications/academic articles/ presentations
- We expect you to finalize your dissertation agreement within 12-18 months.
- You work on your dissertation and its completion.
- We expect you to join the Doctoral School for Chemistry of the University of Vienna.
- You teach within the scope of the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement.
- You take on administrative tasks in research, teaching and administration.
- We expect you to help with the maintenance of our experimental equipment and to take on administrative tasks.
This is part of your personality:
- Completed Masters/diploma degree in Chemistry from a university, preferably in the field of Materials Science or equivalent qualification.
- Knowledge and practical experience in Inorganic Chemistry and Thermodynamics
- Experience in thermal analysis and calorimetry
- Experience in crystallography, X-ray diffraction and Rietveld refinements
- Familiar with electrochemical characterization methods (CV, GCPL, GITT, EIS, etc.)
- Ability to work independently as well as being a team player with high social/communicative skills
- Experience in academic writing and with research methods.
- Excellent command of written and oral English is essential, as well as knowledge of German at B1 level minimum.
- IT skills: MS Office is mandatory, Origin is desired

Contract duration: The employment duration is 3 years. Initially limited to 1.5 years, the employment relationship will automatically be extended to 3 years if the employer does not terminate it within the first 12 months by submitting a non-extension declaration.
