In the group of Univ.Prof.Dr. Christoph Rademacher at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Vienna is a PhD position in the Marie Slodowska-Curie Doctoral Network (MSCA-DN) "AUREUS" available. The aim of the AUREUS network is to train a new generation of researchers as a response to the increasing need for a highly qualified work force in the field of chemical biology to counteract multidrug resistant S.aureus infections.
AUREUS’ intersectoral program is based on a unique international team, including companies, combining expertise in from different fields including chemistry, (micro-)biology and immunology.
The AUREUS network will provide doctoral candidates with broad, top-class scientific and professional competences and skills, thereby expanding the pipeline of future leaders for both industry and academia. Moreover, DCs will be trained in transferable skills, such as scientific communication and presentation of scientific data, team building, entrepreneurship, intellectual property rights and business management, gender equality in research, research ethics and outreach to society. The doctoral candidate will work in collaboration with Stichting Amsterdam UMC (AMC), the Netherlands, Eberhard Karls University Tuebingen (UT), Germany and Glycodiag (GLYD), France.
Your future tasks:
You will acquire complementary skills to exploit and develop different and innovative strategies to:
- working and maintaining primary cells under sterile conditions
- gain greater insights into the molecular recognition of S. aureus WTA by the human immune system.
- harness the acquired knowledge to rationally design and develop effective small molecule inhibitors and immune-based therapies against S. aureus and related bacterial species.
For this you will need to work and maintain primary cells under sterile conditions, establish cell lines using lentiviral transduction, study cell signaling pathways using reporter gene assays. Formulation of nanoparticles using microfluids is a requirement. A general understanding about innate immunity would be a plus.
This is part of your personality:
- Completed Master's degree or Diploma, in the field of biology, biotechnology or pharmaceutical sciences
- Appreciation for interdisciplinary work, proactive drive to collaborate across disciplines and excellent communication skills
- Proficient speaking and writing in English (C1)
- Basic experience in academic writing and with research methods (e.g. mammalian cell culture)
- Didactic competences / experience with e-learning
- IT user skills: e.g. FlowJo.
- Desireable knowledge: cell biology
- You should be a team player with high social skills
