The University of Vienna, Faculty of Chemistry, is home of the Vienna Doctoral School in Chemistry (DoSChem). DoSChem is the largest doctoral training program in Austria focusing on the field of chemistry and closely related sciences by bringing together more than 200 doctoral students and over 50 principal investigators. Our goal is to train excellent scientists and to provide an open-minded environment that allows them to connect with each other and to experience a scientifically rich environment to carry out interdisciplinary and curiosity-driven research.

#3- #4: 2 PhD positions are available in the group of Prof. Veronika Somoza at the Institute of Physiological Chemistry, starting May 2025 or later.
#5: 1 PhD position is available in the group of Prof. Warth, at the Institute of Food Chemistry and Toxicology, starting June 2025 or later.
#6: 1 PhD position is available in the group of Prof. Muttenthaler at the Institute of Biological Chemistry, starting any time soon.
#7: 1 PhD position is available in the group of Prof. Köllensperger, at the Institute of Analytical Chemistry, starting May 2025.
#8: 1 PhD position is available in the group of Prof. Zanghellini at the Institute of Analytical Chemistry, starting May 2025.

The contract duration of all positions is 3 years with a preliminary limitation of 1,5 years and will automatically be extended to 3 years unless the employer hands in a non-extension declaration after 12 months. An extension up to a total of 4 years is then possible provided the excellent performance of the candidate.

The language of the school is English; therefore, English is required, German is appreciated. Further expectations are:


•    Strong communication, data presentation and visualization skills
•    Ability to work both, independently and collaboratively
 

This is part of your personality:

If you have completed master’s degree (or an equivalent) in:

#1:  Experience in synthetic organic/inorganic/peptide chemistry and analytical methods (HPLC, MS, NMR)

Experience with biological experiments in vitro and/or in vivo are advantageous

#2: Experimentally talented with an interest in both chemistry and molecular biology

Able to work both independently and collaboratively across disciplines

#3: Hands-on experience in the application of advanced analytical instruments

Interest in learning and applying sensory evaluation and data science methods

#4: Hands-on experience in human cell culture systems

Interest in flavor science and application of bioinformatics methods

#5: Experience in mass spectrometry and/or advanced programming skills and statistical knowledge
Scientific publishing experience is an asset, excellent written and oral communication skills as well as strong organizational skills are required
High level of self-motivation, commitment, and work ethic; willingness to travel and manage cooperative projects

#6: Strong chemistry, pharmacology, or molecular biology background
Strong ambition and good work ethics

#7: Experience in the area of bioanalytical chemistry, statistical analysis of big data

#8: Strong programming skills in Python, R, or similar languages
Experience with applying AI (ideally) to metabolic modelling is desired
