The faculty covers all historical subjects at the University of Vienna. The departments, working groups and special libraries that exist today are spread across various locations at the University of Vienna. A special feature of all departments is the Institute for Austrian Historical Research, founded in 1854, which was run as a federal organizational unit and was integrated into the Faculty of Historical and Cultural Studies in 2016. The Institute of Austrian historical research is an internationally recognized research and training center for the methodology and maintenance of auxiliary historical sciences (palaeography, documentation theory, file studies, source studies, etc.) in their cultural-historical context on the one hand and and for research into the history of the Habsburg Monarchy and its successor states on the other hand. The history of the Habsburg Monarchy in the early modern period is an essential area of research and has always been dealt with at the highest level of competence, which has also been of great importance for teaching. The members of this institute focus, in their research and teaching, on different times and regions; they are interested in diverging questions and problems and therefore represent different theoretical, conceptual and methodological approaches to historical science.
