We are looking for a postdoctoral researcher in late antique/early medieval history. We are an interdisciplinary team working in the six-year ERC SyG project HistoGenes - Integrating genetic, archaeological and historical perspectives on Eastern Central Europe, 400-900 AD (1 May 2020-30 April 2026). Your work enviroment:
You will be working at the Institute of Austrian Historical Research. Your main activity will be to contribute to an interdisciplinary project about the population history of Eastern Central Europe, c. 400-900 CE, and collaborate with archaeologists, geneticists, anthropologists and historians.
These will be your main tasks:
- You pursue own research on the basis of written sources in the context of the project goals, in particular about migrations, identities and religion, and geographical perceptions of peoples in Central Europe, and/or the transformations of Central Europe in the period.
- You contribute to the discussions about the historical interpretation of the archaeological and genetic evidence and its methodological implications.
- You participate in the integrative activities of the project: meetings, workshops, joint publications, dissemination activities, website maintenance etc.
Your profile:
- PhD in medieval history
- Research experience in the history of the period, preferably on topics relevant for the project, documented by publications and international conference papers.
- Excellent reading competence in Latin and experience in working with late antique/medieval sources and manuscripts.
- Interest and experience in interdisciplinary collaboration.
- International working experience
- Excellent command of German and English written and spoken.
- Competence in communication and team working, and preferably experience of working in large collaborative projects.
- Competence in integrating large collaborative projects.
- Experience in digital humanities, preferably on topics relevant for the project.
